Meet the Team: Sarasuvanna, Admin
I'm Sarasuvanna and I look after the admin side of training. I must enjoy it as I've been with Breathworks for well over a decade and as you can imagine, I've seen some massive changes since first joining this amazing organisation. I'll just say a bit about what's preoccupying me right now.
So in the very front of my 2018 diary, I've written a quote from Socrates: "Beware the barrenness of a busy life." This is an attempt to remind myself of my unhelpful tendency to try to do too much. I sometimes think it'll have on my grave stone "Here lies Sarasuvanna; she did loads" but loads of what and what did it amount to?
So rather than my days passing in a blur, I'm trying to be less busy alongside cultivating present moment awareness. In practical terms, this means taking frequent short breaks when I'm at work (some of us will know how easy it is to get sucked in for hours on end when in front of a computer screen) and also to limit the amount of additional commitments I make in any one week.
So that's starting to address the less busy bit at least on a certain level; obviously the deep-seated reasons why I choose to keep myself so busy are a whole other can of worms which I'll not go into here. The bridge between not being so busy and cultivating awareness seems to be something about beginning to tolerate a certain amount of boredom (which doesn't come easy to me). So that's work in progress.
The cultivating awareness bit hinges on another quote by Suzuki Roshi who said "The most important thing is remembering the most important thing" so for me, that's to do with trying to keep my aspirations at the forefront of my heart and mind. Tara Brach suggests our aspirations need to be heartfelt, sincere, not just a mental exercise and rooted in the present rather than preceded by 'when' or 'if only'. The current phrase that's inspiring me is "mind of kindness" and aspiring to cultivate that, particularly when in the stranglehold of irritation or impatience is something I'm finding particularly helpful albeit not easy.
Wish me luck!
