Photographed on assignment by @ciriljazbec for the current issue of National Geographic Magazine. The desire to teach their children about computers drew these Samburu women to a classroom in a settlement north of Nairobi. They are learning about tablets—designed to withstand tough use—that connect to the Internet through a satellite and come preloaded with educational programs. Technology now has arrived in isolated regions of Africa primarily in the form of relatively inexpensive cell phones. This photo was also featured by the magazine’s photo editors in the best @natgeo photos of 2017. Photo by @FransLanting “The New Normal” When I drove into Santa Barbara yesterday I passed miles of woodland scorched from an earlier wildfire and now the town is besieged by the latest megafire to hit California. Here’s a scene from last night. Look for the home just visible in the lower left surrounded by an inferno. Firefighters saved it. More than six thousand of them are doing what they can to contain the fire. Governor Jerry Brown called this part of the "New Normal” at a press conference two days ago. The state is getting hotter and drier. Fires now break out at a time when we used to get rain. Everyone is awaiting the winter storms that can give the land and the people a reprieve. But what will next year bring? Follow me @FransLanting for more images and stories of a planet under pressure. @natgeocreative @thephotosociety #California #Wildfire #Climatechange #leonardodicaprio @christineeckstrom Santa Barbara, California

Photo @ladzinski / A juvenile green eyed #shag peering into the icy waters of #Antarctica curiously, surveying for predators and whatever else might lie beneath. Entering into the water is a precarious time for young fledglings like this one here, transitioning from land to an environment where it will eventually spend most of its life fishing and exploring. Video by @joelsartore | The Northern Bald Ibis is a critically endangered species that is highly social and congregates in large flocks. At one time two separate populations existed-- a non-migratory Northern African/European population and a migratory Middle-eastern population. It has been of special focus of both European Zoos and US Zoos to keep a healthy captive population with the intent of preserving the species. Many cultural myths are associated with this species and some scholars believe this species was the representative of the Ancient Egyptian God of Knowledge, Thoth. With the conflicts in Syria and other portions of the Middle East, that migratory population has been under extreme pressure and was feared to have been lost. However, recent sightings have confirmed that a few birds still remain. The good news is that it’s been confirmed that the Northern African population has been growing and is starting to form satellite colonies. The @HoustonZoo, where this bird was photographed, supports this species by being an active member of the SSP (species Survival Plan) and, along with the other Zoos in this program, works to safeguard the species for future generations. To see a portrait of this bird, check out @joelsartore! . . #ibis #birds #mythical #eqyptiangodofknowledge #strangeanimals #weirdnature #nature #conservation #biodiversity #animalfacts #wildlife #wildlifephotography #natgeo #savetogether #photoark

Photographed on assignment by @simonnorfolkstudio for the current issue of National Geographic Magazine. The columns of a partially restored, second-to-fifth century synagogue in Capernaum lie atop an older structure very likely visited by Jesus, according to some scholars. Nearby, archaeologists discovered a dwelling that was venerated by early Christians – possibly the home of the Apostle Peter. Capernaum (Hebrew; : כְּפַר נַחוּם‎, Kfar Nahum; Arabic: كفر ناحوم, meaning "Nahum's village" in both languages) was a fishing village established during the time of the Hasmoneans, located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. It had a population of about 1,500. The village was inhabited continuously from the 2nd century BC to the 11th century AD, when it was abandoned sometime before the Crusader conquest. This includes the re-establishment of the village during the Early Islamic period soon after the 749 earthquake. Photo @tasneemalsultan Oaybidah Aludaini – known as Um Ahmed shows her handmade jewellery, that's inspired by Bedouin textiles “This work represents my roots, because I learnt this craft through my mother, aunts and grandmother who taught me how to weave with beads, as well as make tassels and macramé,” She has spent the last year alongside her daughter and granddaughter, to produce a contemporary range of beautifully crafted tasselled earrings and necklaces. A mother of nine children with close to 50 grandchildren, the master artisan proudly displays and sells her work at fairs across the Kingdom. She became her family’s main breadwinner after her husband passed away. Words by Alex Aubry #riyadh #saudiarabia #jewelry #handmadejewelry #torquoisemountain Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

Photo by @renan_ozturk Layers of unclimbed peaks on the Tibetan Plateau from our 18,000ft high camp during the @natgeo “Point of No Return” expedition. The goal was to determine the highest point in SE asia by climbing to the summit of the supposed highest peak with a high end GPS, a measurement not obtainable by satellite data. In the end, as a team, the climb pushed us the brink of starvation, our technical, physical and mental limit. Yet in any such endeavors these are the golden moments that endure and bring us back for more. ~ @hilareenelson @coryrichards @authormarkjenkins @emilyaharrington @taylorfreesolo #myanmar #myanmarclimb Hkakabo Razi

Photo by @williamalbertallard // Valentino Park, 2001 Apricot blossoms fell like pink snow for a few magical moments in this lovely park I visited almost every day I found myself in Turin. For many visits I simply took in the beauty the trees in blossom but knew if I were lucky I’d be in the park on a day a slight breeze would bring the blossoms down and on that afternoon I was delightfully showered with them. At just the right moment a small group of people entered the frame, walking diagonally into the picture, kind of completing the image. #followme @williamalbertallard for more images from Italy and other assignments spanning five decades. #valentinopark #turin #italy #apricotblossom #blossoms #italytrip #italygram #tree #trees #treestagram #flowers #flowerstagram Turin, Italy

Photo @hammond_robin for @witness_change. “I am here because I was not going well mentally. Before I could not sleep, and sometimes I go out for a walk without any desire to return. Sometimes I spoke disorderly. But since I'm having the treatment, I’m fine… The center has helped me with treatments. When I had no medication, it really bothered me. But now that I take it, I feel myself changing. I could not even work before treatment. Now I work well without problem from morning until evening.” 29 year old Lamboni Laré, a mechanic, lives with a mental health problem and attends Centre de Santé Mentale, in Dapaong, northern Togo. #InMyWorld is my new campaign designed to expose the challenges faced by people living with mental health issues and give them the chance to be seen, heard and valued. This first phase of the campaign was created in collaboration with @handicap_international as part of Witness Change's work on global mental health. @witness_change is a nonprofit that aims to end human rights violations for marginalized communities through visual storytelling. Photo by @kirstenluce // Captured #withgalaxy S8, produced with @samsungmobileusa // Sandra Garcia, a filmmaker originally from Mexico City and now living in Los Angeles, takes a dip in the pool in Cabo San Lucas in Mexico. Cabo is best known as a tourist resort town, where most residents are involved in the hospitality industry in one way or another. A few friends and I were lucky enough to line up assignments in this beautiful part of the world. Most of us travel frequently between the US and Mexico but it's rare to all be in the same place at the same time. Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur

Photo by @Jayaprakash_bojan | After over 11,000 photo submissions from around the world, our panel of judges has named the 2017 National Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year! Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan of Singapore is this year's grand prize winner for his stunning shot of an enormous male orangutan, waist-deep in a river, shyly peeking from behind a tree. Our judges were impressed by how the poignant image spoke to the impact deforestation is having on the habitat of this critical endangered species. Video by @joelsartore | The Sumatran rhino is considered one of the rarest mammals in the world. Poaching is rampant for this species and only about 100 are left living within the fragmented rainforests of Southeast Asia. Pictured here is a female Sumatran rhinoceros named Suci at the @CincinnatiZoo. Suci was one of only two in human care in the United States and one of only 10 worldwide. She was born at the Cincinnati Zoo in 2007 and, to the devastation of her keepers and many other admirers, she passed away in 2014. Suci served as a critical component in the fight to save rhinos by contributing to research on female sexual maturity through the testing of her fecal matter. Because of this research, ongoing breeding programs will have a better chance of propagating the species. To see a portrait of Suci, follow @joelsartore. . . #sumatranrhino #rhino #poaching #criticallyendangered #endangeredspecies #southeastasia #nature #conservation #biodiversity #animalfacts #wildlife #wildlifephotography #natgeo #savetogether #photoark

Delagha traveled 4,000 miles from his home in Afghanistan. He has not told his parents in Afghanistan about his brutal journey to Europe: “They asked if I faced a hard time, but I said, ‘No.' I didn’t want them to worry.” For more photos of the refugee crisis follow @mmuheisen and @everydayrefugees #everydayrefugees #muhammedmuheisen

Photo by @shonephoto (Robbie Shone) - Planinska jama is one of the longest river caves in Slovenia. 500 meters (1600ft) from the entrance of the cave is a confluence of two underground rivers: the Pivka River, flowing from the Postojna Polje through Postojna jama (cave), and the Rak River, flowing from Rak Škocjan. This is one of the largest confluences of subterranean rivers in Europe. Here, a team of explorers in an inflatable boat progress along the giant tunnel. This portfolio of photographs was shot for @NatGeoAdventure from the famous river caves of Slovenia, birth place of speleology and home to the 'human fish'. With my caving colleagues I visited 8 caves, each one varied and different with its own personality. Words by Andrew Bisharat @NatGeoCreative

Video by @bertiegregory. A huge male jaguar pulling a caiman out of the water up a slippery, muddy river bank in the northern Pantanal, Brazil. This jaguar demonstrated the meaning of the term power dragging this 8ft long, armour plated, 74 toothed, chunk of contracting muscle out of the water and into the bushes. Shot for a new jaguar TV show with @stevewinterphoto which premiered on Sunday evening on @natgeowild in the US (other territories coming soon!). Huge thanks to the awesome team @natgeo! Also check out this month’s issue of National Geographic Magazine for @stevewinterphoto ‘s jaguar story. Follow @bertiegregory to see more jaguars!
