Day three was the climax of our Mt Kenya adventure. It was a day we were really looking forward to. To summit, we woke up at 2:30 am. Armed with warm attire, hiking poles and headlights, we set off for the peak at around 3:00 am after a light breakfast. Pole pole was the name of the game as we ascended on this almost vertical climb. We trudged slowly listening keenly to the body's reaction against the sharp change of altitude. It was extremely cold and you could feel it on the exposed parts of the face.
The terrain was characterized by loose gravel, rocks and boulders, all scattered in a disorderly manner. Moving further up closer to the summit it was all rocks and the trail was less defined.
By 6:25am we were at the summit savouring the spectacular view of the orange haze on the horizon that precedes the sunrise.
Within a matter of minutes we were humbled to set our eyes on the most priceless phenomenon. Sunrise from Mt Kenya. We watched the sun peep from the horizon and finally it slowly and fully emerged. We also saw Mt Kilimanjaro standing magnificently with all its glory, glacier lake at the bottom of Batian, the shadow of Lenana peak on the wall of Batian.
After a few shots we started the descent towards Mintos hut. Later in the day we toured Lake Michelson, one of the most beautiful and serene lakes in Mt Kenya that instantly sends you into a mood of tranquility. We camped at Mintos hut with a feeling of great accomplishment.
