A year ago today, February 22nd 2017, I was laid off from my job.
Instead of feeling sad, I left work with a giant smile on my face and a feeling of newfound freedom.
A feeling of peace I hadn't felt in a very long time and a vision of a dream that now had the chance to come true because of the endless amount of free time I now had.
Best time of my life!!!! I now could do whatever I wanted. Money I had saved for so long and so gnarly, I suddenly didn't care to spend.
I needed this so badly. For myself, for my sanity and my mental health.
And that was going to Thailand to volunteer with Elephants. @lek_chailert with @elephantnaturepark was my biggest inspiration. Countless weeks and months bored at work I watched her Instagram posts and videos wishing I was there. Wishing I could travel and feel what that lifestyle is like.
Little did I know that that was to become true so soon.
But since I LOVE the ocean and saw an ocean conservation project with diving involved I now couldn't decide anymore.
And what do you do when you can't decide? You take both! It cost about $1,350 & $1,750 for 2 weeks for each program incl. food + board.
I considered @globalteer & @go.eco but needed programs that would line up back to back so I went with goeco for this.
I'm not religious but the timing of everything could not have been better. And I can't express the amount of thanks and gratitude I felt. For the first time in a very, very long time I was able to live in the moment, at peace, content, without my mind running 90mph.
I didn't travel alone. I flew alone. But in Asia I was always with our volunteer groups.
Best experience of my life!
Seeing animals is one thing, being in posh resorts is another but being actively involved with animals, serving a purpose with great personal rewards and experiencing the real lifestyle is priceless. Go volunteer!
